Worcester

Worcester is a city in Worcestershire, England, 31 miles southwest of Birmingham, 101 miles west-northwest of London and 27 miles north of Gloucester. The River Severn flanks the western side of the city centre, which is overlooked by Worcester Cathedral. The Battle of Worcester was the final battle of the English Civil War, where Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army defeated King Charles I's Cavaliers. Worcester is known as the home of Royal Worcester Porcelain, composer Edward Elgar, Lea & Perrins, makers of traditional Worcestershire sauce, University of Worcester, and Berrow's Worcester Journal, claimed to be the world's oldest newspaper. The most famous landmark in Worcester is the imposing Anglican Worcester Cathedral, construction begun in 1084 while its crypt dates from the 10th century.

University of Worcester

The University of Worcester is a public research university, based in Worcester, United Kingdom. Worcester is the only university serving the English counties of Worcestershire and Herefordshire. With a history dating back to 1946, the university began awarding degrees in 1997 and was granted full university status in 2005. Worcester Students' Union is the representative body for students studying at the University of Worcester, and a member of the National Union of Students, it is based in a building on the St Johns Campus, it provides a number of services and facilities. The university was awarded the Carbon Trust Standard, and it was the first university in England to receive a Gold EcoCampus Award for the whole organisation.
